Fueled by his breakthrough Broadway performance, Leslie Odom Jr. brings his celebrated style to the recording studio.
It’s been a particularly fruitful year for actor and singer Leslie Odom Jr. In addition to landing the role of his career in the widely celebrated Hamilton musical on Broadway, he also ended up going home with a well-deserved Tony Award for his portrayal for Aaron Burr.
The show itself even set a record, having garnered 16 nominations. And to cap off all of this achievement, Odom Jr. was also honored by GQ as one of the ten best-dressed men at the Tony’s while wearing his custom Hamilton Shirt. Not a bad run.
So in light of the excitement surrounding his role in the musical, it came as somewhat of a surprise when Odom Jr. announced his plans to leave the musical. Yet rather than seeking downtime or chasing an even more lucrative role, his departure was a bittersweet decision to continually pursue new and different creative opportunities.
The day after taking home the Tony Award, Odom Jr. woke up early to film a music video of “Autumn Leaves” (again wearing a custom Hamilton Shirt) to promote his self-titled jazz album. Having only debuted in June, his soulful and sensitive interpretations of classic jazz staples have been well received. The album even topped both Soundscan’s current and traditional jazz charts at No. 1.
Yet Odom Jr. is not one to slow down to revel in his success. He’s already back in the studio, working on a new album that he hopes to release as early as year’s end.
